Herbert McCants Jr.
Joins Docks as Security Manager
Alabama
State Docks’ Director and CEO James K. Lyons has announced that
Herbert McCants Jr. will become Port Security Manager effective Oct. 23.
McCants is retiring from the Mobile Sheriff’s Department effective
Oct. 20 after 23 years of dedicated
service.
McCants,
who has a bachelor and master’s degree in criminal justice from Troy
State University, said that he is happy to take on the challenges of his
new position. “I feel a deep sadness in leaving the Sheriff’s Office
after almost half of my lifetime. My career as a Mobile County Deputy
Sheriff has been a rewarding one and has allowed me to grow both
personally and professionally. But the challenges of the future are very
exciting.”
During
the 1999 legislative session, Lyons proposed and the Alabama legislature
passed a bill that will allow State Docks’ security to receive police
training, and then have arrest power on State Docks property. The bill
passed the legislature overwhelmingly and was signed into law by
Governor Don Siegelman. McCants will now be in charge of implementing
this training.
“We
have been without a leader of our security staff for the last few
months, and are happy to welcome a trained, qualified manager. Mr.
McCants’ hiring was approved by the Port Authority Board last week. We
look forward to his arrival at the Docks and to the improved security
that we will be offering our customers and employees,” Lyons said. |
